A look back at ancient times like no other, in Athens one can stand among the monuments on Acropolis hill that have been overlooking the city since the 5th century BC. Follow in the footsteps of ancient greats like Socrates and Plato while envisioning life here in one of the world’s oldest cities. Stepping into the Acropolis Museum, marvel at countless treasures from the hill that have managed to survive the test of time, and then stroll the cobbled streets of colorful Plaka. Just below the Acropolis, the at least 3,500-year-old district hosts ancient ruins, endless shops, ouzeries, and eateries

The largest island in Greece, Crete is over 3,200 square miles in size, home to luxury beach resorts with many spectacular stretches of sand, including a famous pink-hued span that makes it popular for getaways spent swimming and soaking up the sun. Beyond its picturesque shores are rugged canyons and soaring mountains, setting the scene for many outdoor adventures. Charming towns like Chania will immerse you in Crete’s Venetian past while Knossos Palace offers a fascinating look at Minoan life from 1700 to 1400 BC. Learn more about its rich history in world-class museums like the Heraklion Archaeological Museum.
Crete
Meteora and Mystras are two of the mainland’s most fascinating destinations. The vast monastic complex of Meteora sits high atop dramatic rugged cliffs northwest of Athens, built by monks in the 14th century. Overlooking the villages of Kastraki and Kalambaka, six of its monasteries are open for exploring. The Byzantine City of Mystras is an archeological site in the southeast of the Peloponnese, tucked along the slopes of Mount Taygetos. Dating to the mid-1400s, it was built in amphitheatrical style with an imposing fortress at its highest point while seven medieval churches are linked by a series of staircases and arches.
Mystras
Naxos is a diverse island with something for nearly everyone. It’s home to some of the country’s most beautiful sandy beaches, edged by translucent turquoise water that’s like swimming in a big natural pool. There are mountains for scenic hikes, intriguing history to explore, and a booming farm- and sea-to-table food scene. You might sample a variety of local gastronomic delights on a food tour, including fresh fish and seafood, Naxian cheeses, the creamy custard-filled pastry called galaktoboureko, and citron liqueur. You’ll also find charming towns to wander through from Naxos Town with its winding marble-paved streets to mountain villages like Apeiranthos.
Naxos
Nestled between Naxos and Sifnos in the Cyclades, the beaches are the star attraction on Paros, with everything from secluded stretches like Laggeri for peaceful contemplation to lively spans like Golden Beach with its brilliant blue waters ideal for watersports with rentals and lessons available. Parikia, the island’s capital, is a delight to explore with with narrow cobbled paths lined with whitewashed homes and buildings housing small family-run shops. Two highlights are the famous 4th-century Byzantine Church of Ekatontapiliani, often referred to as the Church with the Hundred Doors, and the 13th-century hilltop Frankish Castle with its awe-inspiring sea view.

Greece has a complex but efficient ferry service between islands, with certain islands offering multiple ferry lines to choose from. We pre-book premium seats for our clients on fast ferries between some of the nearer islands like Mykonos, Santorini, Paros and Naxos. There are also numerous short direct flights which we utilise from Athens to destinations like Santorini, Crete and Rhodes. We take the hassle out of the trip building process by choosing the correct ferries for our clients, providing them with pre-booked tickets and private drivers to and from the ports.
This often depends on your budget as Santorini can be quite an expensive destination. The key to Santorini is staying somewhere central so you are within waking distance of restaurants and bars. With this in mind, we prefer to base our clients in Oia which offers a wonderful selection of restaurants, bars, stunning Caldera views and secluded boutique hotels. We also book hotels in Fira, which can be more affordable whilst still offering travelers a very good selection of restaurants, bars and great Caldera views.
Being a Southern European country, Greece benefits from lovely warm Mediterranean weather from May and throughout the season. Whilst the water tends to be cooler at the start of the season in the months of April and May, it gets progressively warmer and the months of August and September enjoy some of the warmest sea temperatures thanks to its hot Summer weather. In October the water starts to cool again but is still very pleasant to swim in, especially compared to the Atlantic and Pacific sea temperatures.
These are two very different islands, which is why its worth visiting both in our opinion. Mykonos is great for travelers interested in visiting beautiful beaches, staying in stunning hotels with pools and spending your days relaxing and your evenings dining in excellent seaside restaurants. The nicer hotels tend to be based near popular beaches, so don’t expect to be based too near the centre. Santorini is romantic, with jaw dropping views, boutique hotels built into the cliffside, breath-taking sunsets and is also very compact. So staying somewhere central in important. It’s a great island to finish your Greece trip at before you fly home.
The best beaches and most accessible beaches in Greece are in Crete, Mykonos and Naxos. All of these islands are very accessible by ferry or by direct flight. The iconic Balos beach with its turquoise Maldives water is located near Chania in Crete. Mykonos is adorned with several beautiful sandy beaches which are accompanied by impressive beach bars. Travelers looking for that secluded beach experience should consider Naxos, which has some excellent beaches which are popular with our guests.
Whilst travelers often want to skip Athens in favor of more time on the islands, we highly recommend a 1-2 night stay in Athens. Besides the excellent flight connections in and out of Athens, this vibrant city is home to the ancient Acropolis, which is a must see for first time visitors to Greece. A private tour of Acropolis usually lasts a morning, with an afternoon free to explore the city’s plaka neighbourhood which we do recommend. There are also day tours from Athens to Delphi or even further afield to Meteora which is why we don’t feel Athens should be overlooked.
