Milos Island
Milos is an island in the western Cyclades chain. It’s best known as the isle where the famous statue, “Venus de Milo” was discovered. It sits about halfway between Crete and Athens and features a diverse array of beautiful landscapes thanks to volcanic activity during ancient times. Sometimes called the “island of colors” its sands range from shell- or pebble-covered to white and black, all framed by crystal-clear waters in various hues of blue and green.

Things to do in Milos Island
The Beaches
With over 75 beaches on Milos, you’ll want to spend at least one day enjoying them. Aghios Sotis in the village of Provatas is particularly stunning and framed by shallow blue waters ideal for swimming. On the island’s north shore is Sarakiniko, its most photographed stretch. Filled with white rocks, you might think it was a lunar landscape. Provatas is popular with families, a golden stretch of sand and shallow water that’s easily accessed by a paved road, lined with hotels and eateries.

Soak in the hot springs
Visitors can take advantage of the soothing, healing effects of the island’s many hot springs which are scattered across the island. Most aren’t organized but spots along the shoreline, but there is a spa with thermal waters ranging from 95 to about 106 degrees Fahrenheit in Adamas which sits in a cave known as the Lakkos baths.

The Ancient Theater and Venus de Milo Site
The site where the Venus de Milo, one of the most famous statues from antiquity, was discovered is located near the modern-day village of Tripiti. Nearby are the remains of an ancient Roman theater built by inhabitants of the ancient city of Klima that dates to the Hellenistic Age. It was destroyed by Athenians and rebuilt with a capacity for 700 spectators, with seven tiers and six stairways still very well-preserved.

Milos Mining Museum
This museum is located in the main port of Adamas and hosts a collection chronicling the island’s 10,000 years of mining history. The island is still the largest producer of perlitein and bentonite in Europe. By joining the museum’s Miloterranean Geo experience you’ll be able to discover more about Milos’ mining history, mineral content and unique geology.

Boat tours
A variety of boat tours are available in a range of vessels that will take you around the island for a perspective of it from the water. All depart from Adamas and include food, drink, and the opportunity to swim around caves and view unusual rock formations along with multiple points of interested around the island.

The Plaka
Take a stroll through the Plaka, the island’s capital which sits atop a hill. Not only can you take in gorgeous views of the gulf and spectacular sunsets, but you’ll see lots of traditional whitewashed homes as well as independent shops, bars and restaurants. It’s also home to the archaeological museum that displays a replica of the Venus de Milo which is currently at the Louvre in Paris.
