Santorini
Santorini lies in the southern Aegean Sea, renowned worldwide as the most popular island in all of Greece. Its dramatic scenery includes the stunning caldera that was created by a massive volcanic eruption when the center of the island collapsed into the sea over 3,500 years ago. Jet black sand beaches ring the shores while whitewashed buildings sit atop the cliffs overlooking brilliant sapphire waters. The legendary sunsets and the blue-domed churches in the village of Oia are the island’s most famous picture-perfect shots, but there are postcard-worthy views around nearly every corner.

Things to do in Santorini

Fira to Oia Hike
One of the most beautiful hikes in the Mediterranean follows a path carved between the towns of Fira and Oia, running across the cliffs and through the villages of Fira, Firostefani and Imerovigli. It’s easily doable for most, spanning about 6.2 miles. Many make this a one-way trek and return by bus as it can be challenging under the hot summer sun. Your reward is a spectacular view of the volcano, the magnificent coastline and the Aegean Sea. A detour that adds an hour or so to the hike leads to Skaros Rock which was originally a fortress that protected the island from pirates in the 15th-century. More breathtaking views can be had from its ancient church and crumbling steps.

Explore the Akrotiri Excavation Site
Referred to as the “Greek Pompeii” visiting this fascinating and incredibly well-preserved archaeological site that uncovered one of the Aegean’s most important prehistoric settlements is a must. You’ll get a good glimpse of what life on Santorini was like around 1500 BC, with paneled pathways bringing visitors to clay buildings, small homes and a variety of artifacts. You’ll see the multi-storied buildings, elaborate drainage system, furniture, vessels and magnificent frescoes that reveal the settlement’s prosperity and development.

Wander through Oia Village
Oia is the village you’ve probably seen in countless images that feature Santorini, from postcards to brochures and websites. Wandering through, strolling the maze of narrow streets, winding alleyways and staircases, popping into art galleries and shops along the way, taking occasional breaks at one of the many tavernas for a drink is one of the most popular things to do on the island. Stick around for sunset, with some of the very best views of the myriad of colors that splash across the sea and the sky, found right here.

Go Sailing
There may be no better way to cap off your time on Santorini than by taking a sunset sailing cruise that provides another perspective of the caldera while gliding across the sparkling blue waters of the Aegean. A variety of options are available, most of which include the chance to soak in a hot spring, a visit to a hidden beach to snorkel or swim, and local wine that can be sipped while toasting to one of the world’s best sunsets. Our travel experts can book this for you.

Swim in Amoudi Bay
Those who hike from Fira to Oia often end the journey with a swim in Amoudi Bay. Whether you choose to make the trek or not, this is one of the best places for swimming on the island, a gorgeous spot that sits 300 steps below the village of Oia. If you aren’t up to making the descent, you can hitch a ride with a donkey or drive around. Not only are the craggy coves ideal for a refreshing dip between the rocks, but this is also one of the top spots for dining at traditional Greek seafood tavernas like the Ammoudi Fish Tavern that’s right on the water.
Our Favorite Restaurants & Bars

Seaside Santorini
One of the most stylish beach bar restaurants on Santorini, Seaside Santorini is located on Agios Georgios beach, offering fine dining on gourmet fare in a stunning island setting. The menu features an elegant blend of Mediterranean flavors with the chefs’ own personal culinary style using techniques from around the world. Order the local catch of the day, cooked anyway you like, perhaps the just-caught sea bass served fried or grilled. Enjoy refreshing signature cocktails, wines or spirits to go along with your meal which can be served in the main restaurant area or right on the beach from one of the VIP cabanas or sunbeds.

Metaxy Mas Tavern
The owner of Metaxy Mas Taverna is from Chania, bringing his Cretan flair to the menu that includes plenty of local island dishes like pan-Cycladic chickpea stew with lime along with cured pork and Sfakiani pitas. The kritharoto with mussels, shrimp and saffron is a favorite and there are plenty of options for veggie lovers like broccoli souffle. All can be enjoyed on one of the outdoor terraces that look out to Anafi island or inside a vaulted old converted house. Dessert change daily and including options like a decadently delicious cheesecake.

Lauda Restaurant
Located in the heart of the caldera, Lauda is popular with foodies, featuring Greek Nouvelle cuisine with traditional Greek ingredients along with international culinary delights. It was built on the edge of the cliff nearly a half-century ago as Oia’s first restaurant and a popular gathering place for the locals with its only telephone. Today you’ll discover an elegant setting and breathtaking scenery for an unforgettable dining experience that harmoniously blends the colors and aromas of the island. There’s a six- and nine-course menu along with a la carte items, including mains like lamb, beef, lobster, scorpion fish and the catch of the day. Desserts include options like the Poach Meringue Flavoured with Lime and Eucalyptus Cream.

Kapari Wine Restaurant
Set in a peaceful Imerovigli location perched on the highest point of Santorini in the Kapari Natural Resort, Kapari Wine Restaurant offers stunning sea, caldera and volcano views. Dining on its outdoor terrace guarantees a front row seat for the island’s magical sunsets. Enjoy fusion fare based on the flavors of the Aegean Sea along with an outstanding selection of the island’s Vincento wines. The chef utilizes cutting-edge culinary techniques and contemporary presentation to create his traditional dishes using locally sourced ingredients from small producers. The hot pumpkin soup with sweet wine and crayfish tails in a fresh fish broth is a must-try.

To Psarki
To Psarki, or “The Little Fish” is a taverna that sits at Santorini’s southern tip overlooking the harbor of Athinios. There are several tables outside in a garden and another row of tables looking directly down to the harbor and out to the sea along with an indoor dining room. The menu is seafood-focused, with a number of fish-of-the-day options priced by weight and brilliantly prepared. When the option is available the large juicy prawns, grilled on a skewer are delectably sweet and tender, while dessert is a must. The to-die-for baklava is made from scratch, with a crisp filo pastry.
