The Northern Sporades are located in the northwest of the Aegean off the east coast of mainland Greece, about 75 miles north of Athens between Evia Island and Mount Pelion. It’s made up of the four larger, inhabited islands of Skyros, Skopelos, Skiathos, and Alonissos along with several small and uninhabited islets. Skiathos attracts the highest number of visitors, primarily known for its long, sandy beaches, many of which offer a wide range of facilities. Remarkably verdant, you’ll find beautiful beaches on all of them lapped by stunning cobalt blue waters combined with pine-covered hills that make the archipelago an ideal destination for nature lovers. Wildlife enthusiasts can watch for the endangered Mediterranean monk seal which is protected in the region.
There are two dozen islands in the Northern Sporades although only four are permanently inhabited: Skiathos, Skopelos, Alonnisos, and Skyros. The “Mamma Mia” movies featured their stunning natural beauty but they haven’t been overly impacted by tourism development. No matter which you visit, you’re guaranteed a blissful setting for relaxation and activities enjoyed among picturesque scenery. The diverse terrain includes pine forests, olive groves, soaring cypress trees, and idyllic beaches. In fact, there are more than 60 on Skiathos alone yet it’s just seven miles long and four miles wide. Discover the best stretches, historic attractions, and everything else you’ll need to know for an unforgettable Greece vacation in this region with our guide to the Northern Sporades Islands.
Where are the Northern Sporades Islands?

Best Time to Visit the Northern Sporades

The best time to visit the Northern Sporades is between April and October. Outside of the general tourist season, from November through March, the islands tend to get a lot of rain, hence the lush landscapes. In the winter, Skopelos Town will seem like a ghost town and the beachside villages virtually shut down. For the warmest weather and liveliest action, visit during the peak period from mid-June through mid-September when the average high temperature is around the low 80s Fahrenheit. This is also the busiest time so you’ll need to book well in advance. Alternatively, enjoy mild weather, fewer crowds, and potentially lower prices in spring or early fall. May and the second half of September can be ideal.
How to Get to the Northern Sporades
It’s easy to reach the Northern Sporades with multiple options. From Athens, the quickest, most convenient, and typically least expensive, is to fly into Skiathos Airport (JSI), with regular flights during the tourist season. It’s possible to reach the islands by ferry but you’ll have to travel to the port of Agios Konstantinos which is about 75 miles from Athens International Airport, requiring an approximately two-hour car or bus ride. Once on the regular car ferry, it takes about 3.5 hours to get to Skiathos. One of the most memorable ways to visit is on a Greece private tour or a small-ship cruise as the more intimate vessels can access smaller ports and harbors that the larger ships can’t.
Key Islands of the Northern Sporades

Skiathos
Skiathos is the island where many visitors begin their explorations of the Northern Sporades as it’s home to the archipelago’s international airport. It has the most tourism facilities, including a wide range of shopping venues, bars, restaurants, and luxury hotels. Old Town Skiathos hosts traditional architecture while the Venetian fortress provides a spectacular view of the old port from shady terraces. Many come to enjoy the sandy beaches, with more than 60 along just a 27-mile stretch of coastline. There are options for enjoying an array of watersports, more secluded stretches hidden in coves, and beaches popular for partying. The island’s southern side is known for its calmer turquoise water while the northern side is more tranquil but more affected by winds.
Skopelos
Skopelos was a filming site for the popular 2008 movie “Mamma Mia!” serving as the fictional island of Kalokairi, making it popular among fans who can see the olive trees where Sophie set off on a donkey for her wedding. The island is home to over 360 churches, which includes the Church of Agios Ioannis Kastri, made famous by the film while set atop a rock providing breathtaking views. Skopelos Town is considered to be one of the country’s most picturesque port towns with whitewashed buildings and terracotta rooftops cascading down the hillside and overlooked by the 13th-century Venetian castle. You’re sure to be impressed by the magnificent landscapes too, with pine tree-covered hills and postcard-perfect beaches edged by brilliant aquamarine water.
Alonnisos
The island of Alonissos offers unspoiled natural beauty with hilly terrain, fragrant pine forests, beautiful beaches, and crystal-clear turquoise water. It’s particularly known for its rich marine diversity, hosting the first marine protected area in Greece, the National Marine Park of Alonnisos. Here visitors can explore diverse underwater ecosystems from sea caves and underwater gardens to abundant marine life like octopus, moray eel, crabs, and lobsters. If you’re lucky, you might spot the endangered Mediterranean monk seal. The main town, Chora, offers narrow winding streets lined with traditional stone homes while boasting awe-inspiring views of the sea. There are several shops, tavernas, and attractions, including the UNESCO-listed Monastery of St. John, a place of pilgrimage and Greek Orthodox since the 10th century.
Syros
Skyros is the largest island in the Northern Sporades but it’s less crowded than many others making it ideal for those who want to enjoy an especially serene setting with stunning natural beauty. It has a distinct cultural identity that can be seen in traditional local crafts, music and dance as well as offering a rich history. Visitors can explore everything from archeological sites and Byzantine churches to museums, while a hilltop castle overlooks the main town, Chora. Skyrian horses are unique to Skyros, a small and hardy breed known for its character and beauty that can be ridden on horseback riding excursions that explore the island’s landscapes. There are a variety of beaches, many of which are ideal for swimming.

One can explore many historical sites and cultural landmarks that reflect the region’s significant heritage, including the iconic Agios Ioannis Kastri church in Skopelos. It stands atop a rock overlooking the Aegean providing views of the coast and out to Alonissos. The 13th-century medieval fortress, the Kastro of Skopelos, sits above Chora. The capital of Skyros is home to a medieval castle and multiple historic churches while museum highlights include the Skopelos Folklore Museum and Alonissos Archaeological Museum showcasing artifacts from the island’s history, including pottery and tools.

As noted, Agios Petros on Skros is an enticing option and one of our favorites with white dunes backed by pine trees and towering rock formations lined along the bay. Dining & Nightlife

Local Cuisine
The Northern Sporades offer memorable culinary experiences that are deeply rooted in Mediterranean traditions while typically featuring local produce. Fresh seafood is a highlight, with dishes like grilled octopus, seabream, and shrimp frequently on the taverna menus. Skopelos is famous for its unique cheese, the rich and creamy Skopelos cheese often used in pastries like spanakopita. Other highlights across the islands include flavorful Greek salads drizzled with local olive oil, and moussaka, an internationally popular baked dish made with eggplant, minced meat, and béchamel sauce, a creamy French white sauce. Your mouthwatering meals can be accompanied by local wines, most notably from Skopelos and Alonissos, perfectly complementing the fresh flavors for an authentic taste of the Aegean.
Nightlife
Nightlife on the islands is a mix of vibrant entertainment and laid-back settings for unwinding or socializing. Skiathos offers the most lively scene in the archipelago, especially around Bourgas and Papadiamantis streets with numerous bars and nightclubs hosting music and dancing. Beach parties are common in the summer, often featuring popular DJs and live performances. Skopelos offers a more relaxed experience with cozy tavernas and bars along the waterfront, some of which host live traditional music that can be enjoyed while sipping your favorite beverage.
