A just over 6-mile route will bring you right along the edge of the caldera showcasing breathtaking panoramic views of the Aegean Sea, nearby islands, and the dramatic cliffside architecture Santorini is renowned for. But you’ll find miles and miles of other hiking trails in Santorini, including routes that lead to Profitis Ilias, the island’s highest peak with sweeping vistas of the entire island. It’s also possible to hike trails that lead to ancient sites such as Akrotiri which was destroyed in the 1600 BC volcanic eruption and well-preserved under ash similar to Pompeii.

Fira to Oia
If you only have time for one hike, make it the trek between Fira and Oia (or vice versa). It’s one of the top things to do in Santorini, with the just over 6-mile route bringing hikers along the edge of the caldera, showcasing stunning views of the sea, nearby islands, the unique volcanic landscape, and dramatic architecture, including whitewashed buildings and blue-domed churches. It generally takes about two to three hours to complete with stops along the way to take advantage of the many photo ops. While it can be hiked in either direction, by starting from Fira it will be more downhill and you’ll have an awe-inspiring view of Oia in front of you instead of having to look back.
Ancient Thera Hike
The moderately challenging Ancient Thera hike will lead you to the ruins of the ancient city of Thera, set atop a ridge on the Mesa Vouno mountain. Taking about 1.5 to 2 hours to complete, it showcases a panoramic vista of the sea, the island, and surrounding countryside. While ascending, you’ll encounter a mix of winding paths and rocky terrain, with markers guiding you along. Once at the summit, your reward is the well-preserved ruins that include ancient baths, homes, and even a gymnasium, for insight into Santorini’s history and Hellenistic architecture. Pyrgos to Profitis Ilias

Kamari Beach
The black sand beach of Kamari is edged by clear blue waters with a vibrant world beneath the surface that’s ideal for everyone from beginner snorkelers to the highly experienced. Some of the marine creatures you might see include octopuses, moray eels, wrasse, glassfish, sea urchins, and many different types of crustaceans. There are also unique, maze-like volcanic rock formations. As the water is protected by the surrounding cliffs, it’s typically calm and offers excellent visibility. Snorkeling tours can bring you here but you can easily snorkel on your own in between relaxing on the beach and perhaps taking a break at one of the tavernas nearby for the perfect day of relaxation and adventure while soaking up the sun and the sea.
Red Beach
Red Beach provides an especially memorable underwater experience with a backdrop of Santorini’s famous black and red volcanic cliffs. It’s located near the ancient site of Akrotiri and is renowned for its striking red sands that provide a stunning contrast against the deep blue water of the Aegean. That said, the currents can sometimes be powerful here, so it’s best for more experienced snorkelers who are strong swimmers. Accessing the beach involves a short but rough trek, requiring sturdy shoes, meaning no sandals or flip-flops, but there are also boat tours that can bring you snorkeling just off the shore. Either way, it’s sure to be a memorable experience.
Amoudi Beach
Amoudi Bay is one of our favorite places to snorkel as one of Santorini’s most scenic spots. It sits just below the picturesque village of Oia and boasts a breathtaking backdrop of the dramatic cliffs. The small harbor is lined with waterfront tavernas where you’ll be able to soothe those hunger pains after your snorkeling adventure with tasty local dishes, including fresh seafood. You will need to bring your own snorkeling gear or rent some from a local shop. The rocky coastline and underwater formations make for a great time exploring the diverse ecosystem while the water is typically calm and accessible for beginners and the experienced alike. If you’re up for a thrill, Ammoudi Beach offers the island’s best cliff jumping.

Perissa Beach

It features a long stretch of midnight black sands contrasted against the clear, deep blue sea, enjoyable favorite wind conditions – like Monolithos, they’re best during the summer months when the Meltemi winds are at their peak. If you want to explore more of the island’s interior and off-the-beaten-path spots, ATV and off-road adventures provide one of the most exhilarating options. Best Time of Year for Outdoor Activities
Those who want to primarily focus on outdoor activities in Santorini will want to come during the warmer months of the year. Late April through mid-October is ideal for many recreational pursuits here although if you want to enjoy a warm sea for swimming and other water sports, visit in June, July, August, or the first half of September. The sea temperature will be around 77 degrees and the average high on land is in the mid-80s Fahrenheit. Those who prefer to avoid the thickest crowds while enjoying pleasant weather should consider a visit between late April and early June or mid-September through mid-October. It won’t be as busy and afternoon highs range from about 71 to 79 degrees Fahrenheit.
