Hydra Island

A visit to Hydra is like taking a step back in time. You won’t hear the roar of a motorcycle or the hum of a car engine here, as they aren’t permitted. Instead, transport is by foot, boat or donkey. This is the place to go if you’re looking to relax and get away from it all, enjoying an authentic Greek island experience with few other tourists, and most conversations spoken in Greek.

Explore the Mansion Museums

Some of the mansions that once belonged to ships’ captains are now museums. One of the top things to do on Hydra is to explore them, with Lazaros Koundouriotis the most popular. The impressive building may be just as magnificent as its contents, with coffered wood ceilings and a marble carved-relief wellhead. It houses a variety of paintings by Periklis Byzantios, the first director of the Fine Arts School nearby, and his son, Dikos along with an ethnographic section that includes jewelry, pottery, costumes, lavish pan-Hellenic weavings and more. The Historical Archives Museum showcases artifacts from the War of Independence, costumes and old gravures along with temporary exhibitions.
